For both, an interior and exterior patio, the possibilities to shade the exterior space include opting for a wall awning, pergolas, wall-mounted or with four supports, gazebos, textile sails and even the best outdoor patio and shades you can get, and never forget that choosing the right one will depend on the space you have (there are ten awnings for small patios and the pergolas with awning stand out in large patios).
The awnings extend space of up to 2-3 m with guides that come out from the wall. This protects the area that is stuck to the facade. They can also be installed over a canopy if your patio has one. There are those that are rolled up without a box, with a semi-box (when the awning is folded up, the structure and fabric are protected but the skirt is left out) and with a box (which protects the entire awning fabric). This last option extends the useful life of the awning.
The awnings are comfortable because they are collected when not in use and clear the outside environment. In small patios, they are perhaps the best option. The larger the awning, the more recommendable is a motorized model. It is activated with a remote. “As of 4m in length, you can choose an awning with a motor to facilitate handling”.
This extra for awnings is practical because it helps you forget about picking it up when it starts to rain or strong gusts of wind pick up. A sensor is installed that collects the patio awning automatically (for which it has to be motorized) as soon as it detects adverse conditions that can damage it.
If your patio has generous dimensions, the best way to create a large shaded area that covers everything is to opt for a pergola so that the awning projects from the wall to the edge of the outside. The pergola can have four supports on the ground or only two because it begins on the façade. It can be made of wood or metal (in the color you want or the community of neighbors choose) and have a manual or automatic awning.
Another solution to shade the patio is to place a vegetable fiber awning over the pergola instead of fabric. The hurdle or bamboo, sold in rolls, is appropriate to install on the structure. You must fix it so that it does not rise in the wind. It will give a fixed shadow since you can’t pick up the material when you want, but with a very nice sun-shadow effect.
A cheaper solution (and an awning is always a plus) than installing a pergola on a patio is to create shade with a system of fabric awnings fixed to steel cables. You must have two supports to fix the cables. The fabric awning is attached to them, which is extended and retracted manually. When they are collected, the cables are very discreet insight.
Textile sails are a low cost option to shade the patio. Similar to a fabric awning, they are fixed at various points. Ideally, they should be tight. There are square and triangular ones or custom options. You can play with one to shade an area of the outdoor patio or several to cover the entire surface.
With a very natural and raw effect, natural fiber awnings will allow you to cover the extension of a small patio to give it shade, allowing air to circulate and keeping the outdoor space safe from looks.
The most important thing is that the fabric in which the patio awning is made has protection against UV and infrared rays, so it will be a screen. Ideally, it should block between 90 and 99% of UV and infrared rays, thus avoiding the sensation of heat. In addition, most of the fabrics are micro-perforated, which favors micro-ventilation and prevents the greenhouse effect.
The color also influences the protection of the awning in the rays it filters and, above all, in the light it lets through. Clear canvases filter the sun’s rays, so they bring light to the covered area. The darker the color, the more they protect from the light intensity of the sun. In data, a high-density fabric – around 280g/cm 2 – reduces light (which can dazzle) and heat. You should know that if you live in a community, the color of the awning fabric may be given and you must respect it.
In order to know what size you need for your patio, measure the width of the space where you want to install it and the length you want it to be, that is, how far you want it to cover. For fixed arm awnings, the length of the awning will be from the anchor point to the length it projects with the arms extended. Those with extendable arms have an adaptable projection. There are standard sizes that usually reach 2.5 m wide.
This influences the choice of the awning. You should know that if the patio faces west when the sun begins to hide, the awning will stop providing shade. The same will happen in the morning if it is facing east. So, to prolong the shaded area, choose an awning with up-down rotating arms.
